Blood is a living tissue and cannot be manufactured artificially. Its synthetic production for clinical use is not realistic. European hospitals need millions of liters every year.

The Clinical Path: Where does your blood go?
Donated "whole blood" (450 ml) is rarely transfused as a whole. Using a laboratory centrifuge, the blood is separated into three basic therapeutic components. A single donation can thus help multiple patients.
Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)
Stored for a maximum of 42 days in refrigerators. They are absolutely crucial for carrying oxygen in patients after massive car accidents, major surgeries, or severe anemia.
Blood Plasma
Rapidly frozen at -30 °C and lasts up to 2 years. Contains vital proteins for blood clotting. It is also used to manufacture indispensable medicines for hemophiliacs or burn patients.
Platelets (Thrombocytes)
They have the shortest shelf life of all—only 5 to 7 days. They must be kept constantly moving on special agitators. They stop bleeding and are critically important for oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy.
